An Infowars reporter was fatally shot Sunday night in Austin, Texas, after confronting suspects who were allegedly breaking into his vehicle, according to police and website founder Alex Jones.
Jamie White, 36, was shot when he attempted to intervene with at least two suspects burglarizing his car outside his apartment in south Austin, the Austin Police Department confirmed in a news release. White received treatment at the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after midnight.
Austin police initially did not identify White as the homicide victim when they announced the killing early Monday morning. However, Alex Jones, the founder of the far-right conspiracy theory website Infowars, quickly named White as one of his reporters, stating in a website post that White had been "brutally murdered."
"Jamie was a light we were blessed to experience as much as we did," Infowars said in a statement on its website. "He's a one-of-a-kind man who poured his devotion in anything he did. Thank you Jamie."
According to police spokesperson Leah Ratliff, officers responded to a shooting report at 11:56 p.m. Sunday in a residential area of south Austin. Upon arrival, they found White with "obvious signs of trauma."
Homicide detectives have determined that White was shot when he attempted to stop at least two suspects who were "possibly burglarizing" his vehicle. As of Tuesday afternoon, no additional information about the suspects has been released.
White regularly covered President Donald Trump and prominent right-wing figures including Steve Bannon and Elon Musk for Infowars.
