India and the U.S. have launched ‘Mission 500’ to more than double bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump committed to negotiating a Bilateral Trade Agreement by fall 2025. They also introduced COMPACT to enhance trade, align trade policies with national security, and foster technological innovation.
As one of the first world leaders hosted by President Trump in his second term, Prime Minister Modi's visit underscored the strategic significance of India-U.S. relations. The two nations reaffirmed their commitment to fostering economic growth, strengthening supply chains, and ensuring fair trade practices that benefit both economies.
What Is ‘Mission 500’?
To achieve this ambitious goal, both leaders have agreed to negotiate a multi-sector Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), with the first phase expected to be finalized by fall 2025. This agreement will focus on reducing trade barriers, increasing market access, and integrating supply chains across various industries.
The Role of COMPACT
Under COMPACT, the two nations will adopt an integrated approach to enhance trade across goods and services sectors. By working toward lowering tariffs and eliminating non-tariff barriers, the initiative seeks to create a more dynamic and equitable trade relationship.
The Road Ahead
As the world watches the progress of ‘Mission 500,’ the India-U.S. partnership stands at a crucial juncture. Strengthening economic ties through strategic collaboration could pave the way for a new era of prosperity, innovation, and mutual growth.
