Greenland’s recent election saw a decisive move towards change, with the centre-right Democrats emerging as the leading party. However, the final direction of the territory’s policies—particularly regarding its relationship with the United States—will depend on the outcome of ongoing coalition negotiations. The election, influenced by domestic concerns, may have international ramifications depending on which parties align in the new government.

Greenland’s recent elections, held on March 12, 2025, were largely driven by domestic concerns such as healthcare, pensions, and fisheries, rather than the external pressure from the US. Despite the attention given to US President Donald Trump's controversial comments on Greenland, voters focused on policies directly impacting their daily lives. The election outcome reflects a desire for a fresh approach to governance in Greenland, with the centre-right Democrats securing the most seats, signaling a shift from the previous leadership.

Trump’s influence and Greenland’s election

Though domestic issues dominated the election, US President Donald Trump's push to gain control of Greenland added a unique element to the campaign. Trump made headlines with his visit earlier in the year and his bold statements regarding the island's future. During his speech to Congress, Trump expressed his intent to acquire Greenland “one way or the other” and promised to make the territory “rich.” While his influence played a role in the public conversation, the election results show that Greenlanders prioritized issues of local governance over external pressures.

Naleraq’s strong showing and the coalition puzzle

The Naleraq party, which is known for its pro-US stance and aspirations for Greenland’s rapid independence from Denmark, performed strongly in the election, securing second place overall. Led by Pele Broberg, Naleraq advocates for closer ties with the United States, seeking to speed up Greenland’s independence process. In contrast, the victorious Democrats, led by Jens Frederik Nielsen, are focused on a more gradual path to independence, emphasizing the need to build a stable foundation before making any major political shifts. The future of Greenland’s relationship with the US hinges on how the coalition talks unfold, with the possibility of Naleraq joining the government still on the table.

A delicate path forward for Greenland’s government

With coalition talks expected to take several weeks, the final makeup of the government will determine Greenland’s course on several critical issues, including its stance on independence and relations with the United States. Democrat leader Jens Frederik Nielsen has expressed openness to negotiating with Naleraq, though he has also suggested the inclusion of other parties in the discussions. These negotiations are crucial, as they will shape not only Greenland’s internal policies but also its position on the global stage. The outcome will also influence how the US perceives its relationship with Greenland, especially as Trump seeks to make strategic gains in the Arctic region.
