Kylian Mbappé’s legal team has initiated action to resolve their dispute with Paris Saint-Germain, with the France star claiming the club owes him €55 million in unpaid wages. The money was seized from PSG's bank accounts in a precautionary move, marking the latest chapter in a bitter legal standoff.
Mbappé's legal team takes decisive action
Kylian Mbappé’s ongoing legal dispute with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has escalated, as his lawyers have successfully seized €55 million ($61 million) from the club’s accounts. This action comes after months of failed negotiations regarding unpaid wages. According to legal expert Thomas Clay, the seizure was approved by a Paris court on Thursday as part of Mbappé’s legal strategy. A hearing for the case is scheduled for May 26.
Mbappé’s primary lawyer, Delphine Verheyden, emphasized that the decision to take such aggressive legal measures was due to PSG’s failure to pay the owed amount despite a year of attempts to resolve the issue amicably. "We have given the club enough time, and now we have no choice but to go on the attack," Verheyden stated.
Legal challenges mount for PSG
In addition to freezing PSG's funds, Mbappé's legal team has filed multiple legal challenges. They are calling for the French sports minister’s intervention and have questioned the French Football Federation's decision to dismiss Mbappé's appeal against the club. They have also asked the Federation to notify UEFA that PSG has breached its salary obligations, potentially threatening the club’s license to participate in the Champions League.
This legal battle revolves around Mbappé’s claim that PSG owes him three months' salary and the final portion of a loyalty bonus. Last October, the French league appeals commission ruled in Mbappé’s favor, ordering PSG to pay the disputed wages. However, the club has contested the claim, asserting that Mbappé agreed to relinquish his bonuses in exchange for rejoining the team after opting not to extend his contract.
A strained departure from PSG
Mbappé's relationship with PSG soured significantly in the lead-up to his departure. Despite signing a lucrative contract extension in 2022, Mbappé was disappointed when PSG failed to fulfill promises to bring in key players, particularly after he was paraded in front of fans with a jersey marked "2025," only for the actual contract to run until 2024.
The player caused a stir in June 2023 when he informed PSG that he would not exercise his option to extend the contract for another year, putting the club in a difficult position. The standoff led to Mbappé being excluded from PSG’s preseason tour, and the club attempted to sell him to avoid losing him for free. He rejected a massive €300 million move to Saudi club Al-Hilal, and after being excluded from the season opener, he returned to the squad following talks with the club.
PSG responds with calls for mediation
In response to the mounting legal challenges, PSG has reiterated its desire for an "amicable" resolution, despite the ongoing tensions. The club issued a statement claiming that Mbappé has shown "bad faith" and rejected multiple attempts at mediation. PSG insists that Mbappé must honor the commitments he made to the club, both publicly and privately, as part of his contract.
Mbappé’s legal team, however, has suggested that the club’s treatment of the player was unreasonable, including claims of harassment. Alongside the legal action for unpaid wages, Mbappé and his mother have filed lawsuits for online abuse, further compounding the legal troubles for PSG.
