The 36th annual GLAAD Media Awards celebrated exemplary LGBTQ representation in various media. Highlights included wins for "Hacks" as Outstanding Comedy Series and "9-1-1: Lone Star" for Outstanding Drama Series. Cynthia Erivo was honored for her advocacy against homophobia. The awards underscore the significance of inclusivity in entertainment and journalism.
The 36th annual GLAAD Media Awards took center stage in Los Angeles, honoring the best in LGBTQ representation across television, film, journalism, and more. Hosted by Michael Urie, the event showcased outstanding achievements in media that promote fair and accurate portrayals of the LGBTQ community. The awards ceremony will be available for streaming on Hulu starting April 12.
This year's winners included a diverse range of films, television series, and digital content. "Hacks" (Max) was recognized as Outstanding Comedy Series, while "9-1-1: Lone Star" (Fox) won for Outstanding Drama Series. The highly anticipated "Agatha All Along" (Disney+) took home the award for Outstanding New Series, and "The Groomsmen: Second Chances" (Hallmark) was honored as Outstanding Film – Streaming or TV.
Music also had its moment in the spotlight, with Doechii receiving the Outstanding Music Artist award for "Alligator Bites Never Heal." Meanwhile, Netflix’s "Will & Harper" won Outstanding Documentary, and the popular reality series "RuPaul’s Drag Race" (MTV) secured the award for Outstanding Reality Program – Competition.
In the realm of journalism, The Advocate was recognized for Outstanding Magazine Overall Coverage, and NBC News’ online article "Friends Remember Nex Benedict, Oklahoma Student Who Died After School Fight, as ‘Fiery Kid’" by Jo Yurcaba won for Outstanding Online Journalism Article. Other winners included CBS’s "Big Gay Football" for Outstanding TV Journalism Segment and PBS’s "Sarah McBride Reflects on Becoming First Openly Transgender Person Elected to Congress" for Outstanding Live TV Journalism.
The evening also featured special honors, with actress Cynthia Erivo receiving the Stephen F. Kolzak Award for her advocacy against homophobia. Additionally, Q.Digital was presented with the Barbara Gittings Award for Excellence in LGBTQ Media. Several projects received Special Recognition Awards, including "DRAG: The Musical," "La Verdrag" (Canal Once), and "The Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center."
Among other notable winners, "Dragon Age: The Veilguard" (BioWare/Electronic Arts) was named Outstanding Video Game, and "Suicide Squad: Dream Team" (DC Comics) won for Outstanding Comic Book. Broadway was also celebrated, with "Lempicka" and "Oh, Mary!" tying for Outstanding Broadway Production.
