Conclave leads the way with 12 nominations at the 2025 BAFTA film awards

The papal thriller Conclave leads the nominations for the 2025 BAFTA Film Awards, earning 12 nods in Britain’s top film honors. The movie, which follows scheming cardinals deciding who will become the next pope, is up for Best Film, Best Director for Edward Berger, and Best Leading Actor for Ralph Fiennes, who plays the dean of the College of Cardinals overseeing the election process. Isabella Rossellini received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role as a nun in the film, which is based on Robert Harris’s novel. Berger, whose German remake of All Quiet on the Western Front swept the 2023 BAFTA Awards with seven wins, continues his streak of success with Conclave . The Spanish-language film Emilia Pérez follows closely with 11 nominations. Blending musical, crime, and comedy, the movie stars Zoe Saldaña as a lawyer helping a drug cartel leader, played by Karla Sofía Gascón, transition from male to female. Gascón was nominated for Best Leading Actress, while Saldaña and Selena Gomez, who plays the drug lord’s wife, earned Supporting Actress nominations. Directed by Jacques Audiard, the film is also in the running for Best Film. Other notable contenders include Wicked , the blockbuster adaptation of the stage musical, which received seven nominations, and the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown , in which Timothée Chalamet portrays the singer’s rise to fame. A Complete Unknown earned six nominations, including Best Film. Rounding out the Best Film category are The Brutalist , where Adrien Brody plays a Jewish-Hungarian immigrant rebuilding his life in the U.S. after World War II, and Anora , a story about a young exotic dancer entangled with the son of a Russian oligarch. All of the Best Film nominees are directed by men. The 2025 BAFTA Film Awards will take place on February 16 at London’s Royal Festival Hall, hosted for the second year by Doctor Who star David Tennant. The event, often seen as a preview of the Oscars, will likely offer clues about potential winners at the Academy Awards on March 2.
