Bianca Censori’s sheer dress at the 2025 Grammy Awards sparked debate over artistic expression, dress codes, and decency laws. While some praised her bold fashion choice, others criticized it as inappropriate. Grammy officials and California laws were discussed, yet no legal action was taken. The incident fueled a larger cultural conversation about public decency standards.

The Grammy Awards have long been a stage for bold fashion choices, but Bianca Censori’s near-nude appearance at the 2025 ceremony has ignited a heated discussion on artistic expression, dress codes, and even legal boundaries.

Censori, 30, arrived at the event alongside her husband, Kanye West, in a sheer illusion stocking dress that left little to the imagination. Her outfit immediately drew attention and controversy, with many questioning whether it violated the Recording Academy’s dress code or even California’s public decency laws.

A Controversial Red Carpet Moment

The spectacle seemed to be inspired by West’s Vultures 1 album cover, which features a topless woman clad only in a thong and boots. While some saw Censori’s outfit as a bold artistic statement, others criticized it as inappropriate for a public event, particularly one attended by children.

Grammy executive producer Raj Kapoor addressed the controversy, stating that the official dress code for attendees is “artistic black-tie.” However, he admitted that in the music industry, this guideline is often open to interpretation. “Obviously, there is a dress code for anyone performing on the show, and we have to adhere to standards and practices,” Kapoor explained in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE. “But as far as attendees and nominees, that’s a question for the Recording Academy.”

Did Censori Violate Dress Code or the Law?

Past wardrobe guidelines from CBS Program Practices indicate that attire exposing “buttocks and female breasts” should be “adequately covered,” and sheer clothing that might expose nipples should be avoided. The advisory also specifies that the “genital region should be adequately covered so that there is no visible ‘puffy’ bare skin exposure.”

Beyond the Grammys' internal policies, legal implications have also been raised. According to California law, indecent exposure occurs when an individual “intentionally exposes their genitals or naked body in front of someone who could be offended or annoyed.” While Censori’s outfit may have pushed boundaries, no legal action has been taken against her.

A History of Grammy Fashion Statements

The Grammys have a long history of daring red carpet moments, from Jennifer Lopez’s iconic green Versace dress in 2000 to Lady Gaga’s dramatic egg entrance in 2011. However, Censori’s look raises questions about where the line between artistic freedom and public decency should be drawn.

Despite rumors that West and Censori were escorted out of the event due to their appearance, PEOPLE confirmed that the couple left voluntarily. Later that evening, they attended an afterparty, where Censori continued to push fashion boundaries in another sheer ensemble.

A Larger Cultural Conversation

The incident has sparked widespread debate on social media, with opinions ranging from admiration for Censori’s confidence to concerns about the influence of such fashion choices on mainstream culture. Some argue that as an adult in a creative industry, she should have the freedom to express herself without backlash. Others believe that public events, particularly televised ones, should maintain certain standards of decency.

As discussions continue, one thing is clear: Censori and West have once again proven their ability to dominate headlines, whether through music, fashion, or controversy. Whether this moment will influence future red carpet trends or lead to stricter enforcement of dress codes remains to be seen.
