The commercial, featuring a Wisconsin cheese market owner using Gemini to generate product descriptions, drew attention for an erroneous claim about Gouda cheese consumption.
The original version of the advertisement included an AI-generated statement claiming Gouda accounts for "50 to 60 percent of the world's consumption," a statistic that cheese enthusiasts quickly challenged on social media. The error underscores the persistent issues with AI-generated content, even from major tech companies like Google.
This mishap occurs as Google aggressively integrates its Gemini AI technology across its product suite, competing with rivals OpenAI, Meta, and Chinese competitors. The incident follows previous controversies surrounding Google's AI-generated search results, including misleading information about former President Barack Obama and bizarre recommendations about pizza preparation.
Google Cloud executive Jerry Dischler defended the error on X, suggesting it wasn't an AI hallucination but rather stemmed from multiple websites reporting the statistic.
